Semimicro Calorimeter

The Semimicro Calorimeter (LESC-6725) is a compact static jacket oxygen bomb calorimeter for measuring the heat of combustion of small samples when only limited test material is available. Its 22 mL semimicro bomb takes 25 to 200 mg samples liberating up to 1200 calories, a need that arises in marine biology and other ecological studies and in testing heat powders and pyrotechnic mixtures. Self-oxidizing heat powders releasing less than 2400 calories per charge can also be fired.

How it works

The weighed sample is placed in the 1109A semimicro oxygen vessel, which has a manual valve and is filled with oxygen by hand. The bomb sits in 450 g of water inside a silvered glass Dewar flask that serves as the calorimeter vessel and gives static thermal insulation; the flask is held in a stainless steel air can and lifts out for filling and cleaning. The bucket is also filled manually. The 6772 precision calorimeter thermometer/controller handles temperature measurement, automation and data, with the same functions as the larger series 6000 calorimeters. Throughput is 2 to 3 tests per hour with 6 to 10 minutes of operator time per test, in the 0.4% precision class.

Interfaces are a USB port for printer and balance, SD memory for data and log transfer and TCP/IP over Ethernet. The calorimeter measures 22 x 33 x 33 cm and the 6772 controller 56 x 36 x 31 cm.

The 22 mL, 1109A Oxygen Bomb used in the semimicro calorimeter will handle samples ranging from 25 to 200 milligrams, liberating up to 1200 calories when burned in oxygen.

An Effective Thermal Jacket

Effective static thermal insulation is provided by using a silvered glass Dewar as the calorimeter vessel. This vacuum flask holds the 1109A Bomb in 450 grams of water. It is supported within a stainless steel air can from which it is easily removed for filling or cleaning.

Full Series 6000 Instrumentation

The 6725 Semimicro Calorimeter utilizes the 6772 Precision Calorimeter thermometer/controller which provides all of the temperature measurement, automation and data handling capabilities of the larger series 6000 Calorimeters described in the 6000MB Series 6000 Oxygen Bomb Calorimeters Catalog.

1109A Semimicro Oxygen Bomb

This is a 22 mL bomb designed for use in the 6725 Semimicro Calorimeter and earlier series 1425 Calorimeters. It is intended for samples ranging from 25 to 200 milligrams, liberating up to 1200 calories. It is also used for heat powders that are self oxidizing and release less than 2400 calories per charge.
