IP Ingress Protection Rating Test Equipments
IP ingress protection test equipment applies water or dust to an enclosure under the conditions of IEC 60529 and shows whether the claimed IP code, IPX1 to IPX9K for water and IP5X or IP6X for dust, is met. Each chamber reproduces one delivery method: drip, oscillating spray, hose jet, hot high pressure spray, immersion or dust. The pass criterion comes from the product standard, not from the chamber.
What the range covers
- Dripping Tester (IPX1, IPX2)
- Rain Test Chambers, Rain and Flush water test chambers, IP Rain Spray Test Chambers, Rain and Splash Water Test Equipment (IPX3 to IPX6)
- Waterproof Test Chambers and Box Rain Test Chamber
- High Pressure High Temperature Spray Test Chamber (IPX9K)
- Water Soaking Test Chamber and Water Pressure Immersion Tester (IPX7, IPX8)
- IP Dust Resistance Test Chamber (IP5X, IP6X)
Engineering features
Inner chambers and turntables are SUS 304 stainless steel; exteriors are painted or powder coated steel plate. Working spaces run from 600 x 600 x 600 mm to 1200 x 1200 x 1200 mm, with 400 to 600 mm turntables rated for 50 kg. The immersion tester is a 3 mm wall stainless tank rated 0.6 MPa for tests to 0.5 MPa, equivalent to 50 m depth.
Drip panels meter 1 to 5 mm/min through 0.4 mm holes. Oscillating tubes of 400 mm radius swing 60 or 180 degrees at 1.1 and 1.8 L/min. Hose nozzles of 6.3 and 12.5 mm deliver 12.5 and 100 L/min. The IPX9K chamber sprays water at 80 ±5 °C and 8000 to 10000 kPa from four angles. The dust chamber circulates talcum powder at 1.5 m/s, adjustable to 4.99 m/s.
Control is by a 7 inch touch screen and PLC; test time, table speed, tube angle and flow are programmed. Protection covers earth leakage, short circuit and low water level, with over-pressure relief on the immersion tester.
Selecting a configuration
The IP code fixes the delivery method; chamber size, water handling and fixturing follow from the specimen. To quote, we need the following.
- Target IP codes, and whether one cabinet must cover several
- Governing standard: IEC 60529, ISO 20653, IEC 60598-1 or an OEM method
- Specimen envelope, mass and orientation, and whether it is powered during the test
- Water supply, recirculation and drainage at site
- Test duration and cycles per day
- Electrical supply: 220 V single phase or 380 V three phase
Typical applications
- Electrical cabinets, connectors and junction boxes
- Automotive lamps, sensors and under-hood parts
- Luminaires per IEC 60598-1
- Consumer electronics rated IPX7 and IPX8
