Steady-State Gas Permeameter and Porosimeter

The Steady-State Gas Permeameter and Porosimeter measures both gas permeability and porosity of plug-sized core samples in one bench instrument. It is a routine core analysis tool for service laboratories, operators and universities that need permeability by steady-state flow and porosity by isothermal nitrogen expansion on the same plug without moving it between instruments.

How it works

The plug is loaded in the core holder and confining pressure is applied to seal the sleeve against the sample. For permeability, gas is passed through the plug at a set rate on one of two flow ranges, 0 to 50 and 0 to 600 cc/min, and the differential pressure across the plug is recorded once flow is steady. Permeability is calculated from flow rate, differential pressure and plug dimensions. Flow pressure is 0 to 150 psi and the measured range covers 0.01 md to 10 darcies.

For porosity, a reference volume of nitrogen at known pressure is expanded into the pore space at constant temperature. The equilibrium pressure gives the pore volume, from which porosity is calculated. Pressure transducer accuracy is 0.1% of full scale and flow accuracy is 1% of full scale. The instrument operates at ambient temperature. Standard confining pressure is 0 to 400 psi; a 10,000 psi option is offered for measurement under overburden stress.
