High-Precision Slicing Saw

The High-Precision Slicing Saw, model CT-TS-SLICE, cuts slide-mounted rock chips down to about 200 µm before final lapping in thin section preparation. The chip, already bonded to a glass slide, is held against the blade and the excess rock is sliced away, which shortens the lapping step that follows. The saw is built on a heavy-duty bench-top frame, 150 kg and 700 x 700 x 1300 mm, for vibration-free cutting and uniform cut quality.

How it works

Slides are clamped in the holder: two specimens of 30 x 45 mm (1 x 1.5 in.) or one specimen of 60 x 45 mm (1 x 3 in.), with other sizes on request. The 150 mm diameter, 1 mm thick blade is water lubricated; cutting speed is 4,000 rpm and motor speed is 3,000 rpm. Cut thickness is set with 5 µm resolution and the feed is controlled to give a uniform slice down to the minimum specimen thickness of 200 µm. The controlled variables are cut thickness and feed; the measured variable is chip thickness. Multiple slides of varying sizes can be processed, and the cutting area is open for cleaning between batches. Power is 220 VAC, 50/60 Hz.
