Hydrates studies system

The Hydrates Studies System is a mercury-free apparatus for gas hydrate equilibrium measurements and inhibitor performance assessment. It holds the test fluids in a 60 cc visual cell at pressures up to 3,000 psi and temperatures from -20 °C to 150 °C, and records pressure, volume and temperature while hydrates form. The system sits in the Coretest hydrates group, which studies where hydrates form and how fast they build under high pressure and low temperature.

How it works

Four methods are available. In the isochoric method the cell volume is held constant; in the isobaric method pressure is held constant; in the isothermal method temperature is held constant. The fourth method is visual. The cell is made of synthetic sapphire (Al2O3) and allows 360° viewing along its full length, so nucleation and growth can be observed directly. The same cell supports optical measurements that use coherent or non-coherent light to characterize mixtures.

A magnetic drive stirs the sample. Temperature is regulated to ±0.1 °C and measured with 0.1 °C accuracy. Pressure accuracy is 0.1% of full scale, and volume accuracy is 0.01 ml. Power supply is 220 VAC, 50 Hz. Results guide inhibitor selection and flow assurance work.
