Overburden Core Saturator

The Overburden Core Saturator (CT-PREP-OSAT) saturates clean, dry core plugs with water, brine, oil or another liquid while the plug is held at overburden pressure. Saturation at stress prepares samples for permeability, resistivity and capillary pressure testing. It is the overburden-condition member of the Coretest core saturation group, alongside manual, compact manual and automated saturators for bench work.

How it works

The plug is placed in the saturator and confining pressure of up to 5,000 psi is applied, so that the pore structure is at the stress it will see in later tests. The sample is first evacuated to remove air from the pores; the vacuum source reaches 10^-3 mbar. Saturant is then admitted at a flow rate of up to 10 cc/min until the pore volume is filled. The controlled variables are overburden pressure and the vacuum-then-saturation sequence. The measured quantity is the saturation state of the sample at stress. Operation is at ambient temperature.

Standard plug sizes are 1 in and 1.5 in diameter with length up to 12 in. Wetted parts are 316 stainless steel, with other materials on request. The unit weighs 100 kg and runs on 110-220 VAC, 50/60 Hz, single phase. Sample size, capacity, materials, tooling and instrumentation are configured per project.
