X-Ray Computed Tomography Scanner

  • The X-Ray Computed Tomography Scanner (model CT-ISS-CT) produces in-situ saturation profiles and derived properties of single-phase and multiphase core samples. A multi-slice scanner with 64 detector arrays is combined with a core holder rated for reservoir conditions, and the assembly can be coupled with the flow recirculation systems from the same range.

    How it works

A core of 1.5 in diameter and 4 to 12 in length (other sizes on request) is loaded in the core holder, which applies confining pressure up to 700 bar (10,000 psi) and pore pressure up to 700 bar, and holds the sample at up to 150 °C with a homogeneous temperature control system. While fluids are flowed, the scanner acquires cross-sectional images: 128 slices per rotation, 0.625 mm slice thickness, 0.187 mm smallest pixel, 0.31 mm cubed isotropic spatial resolution, rotation time 0.5 to 1 s, and 30 cm of coverage in under 4 s at pitch 1.53. The tube voltage is selectable at 80, 100, 120 or 140 kVp, and single and dual energy scanning modes are provided. Scan geometry and reconstruction are the controlled variables; the reconstructed images give the density distribution and volumetric saturation along the core.

The scanner requires a 380 VAC, three-phase, 100 kW supply, with a maximum power consumption of 54 kVA, and compressed air at 7 bar (100 psi).
