Electrical Properties System (Ambient)

The Electrical Properties System (Ambient) CT-RCA-EPA determines rock and brine resistivity at ambient conditions for fully and partially brine-saturated core samples. From these measurements the resistivity index and the saturation exponents are derived, which together with formation factor and cementation exponent feed Archie-based log analysis.

How it works

A core plug of 1 inch or 1.5 inch diameter and up to 3 inches long is placed in the measuring cell. Electrical excitation is applied through either two or four electrodes and the resistance of the plug is read. The measurement is repeated at each saturation state as the brine content of the plug is changed, so the controlled variables are the saturation state and the electrical excitation. Brine resistivity is determined as well, so that formation factor and resistivity index can be calculated.

The system operates at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. It requires 110 to 220 VAC at 50 or 60 Hz and a 150 psi air supply. For measurements under confining stress the companion Electrical Properties System (Overburden) is offered; the Capillary Pressure and Resistivity System (Porous Plate) pairs saturation with electrical response, and Calibrated Resistivity Check Plugs verify the measurement chain.
