HPHT Rheometer

Description

The Coretest HPHT Rheometer brings true downhole-condition rheology to the bench. A Couette concentric-cylinder cell rated to 2,000 psi (138 bar) and 260 C (500 F) reproduces real reservoir pressure and temperature, so drilling fluids, cement slurries and fracturing fluids are characterized as they actually behave under load - not as they look at ambient.

At its core is a deliberate engineering choice: a torsion-spring torque element coupled directly to the bob and read by a high-resolution optical encoder. Torque is measured directly - no magnetic couplings, no intermediate drives - eliminating the hysteresis and inertia errors of magnetically-coupled designs. The optical encoder never wears (unlike potentiometric sensors) and can be serviced or recalibrated without opening the high-pressure cell.

Built to be lived with: every wetted part is Hastelloy C276 - the benchmark for acids and brines; there are no bob-shaft bearings to wear out; and seals and bob are operator-replaceable with standard tools, no service engineer or special fixtures. A dry sliding carbon-block heater (1,200 W) reaches temperature fast and cools to ambient in under 15 minutes. Dual temperature controllers and certified pressure relief keep operation safe.

The Windows software programs multi-step tests, acquires data in real time and computes the full rheological picture automatically - Bingham plastic (PV/YP), Power Law (n, K), Herschel-Bulkley (t0, n, K), 10s/10min/30min gel strengths and API RP 13D dial readings (600/300/200/100/6/3 rpm) - exporting straight to Excel.

Measurement envelope: viscosity 0.5-5,000,000 cP, shear rate 0.00004-1,870 s-1, shear stress 1-15,000 dyn/cm2, speed 0.0001-1,100 rpm continuous, 50 mL sample, 0.01% full-scale resolution; ISO 13503-1 and API RP 39 compliant.
