Pressurized Brine Crystallization Temperature Tester

The Pressurized Brine Crystallization Temperature Tester determines the temperature at which salts begin to crystallize from a brine held under pressure. Completion fluid and stimulation laboratories use it to find the crystallization limit of produced or injected brines at representative pressure, so that salt drop-out and scaling in wells, flowlines and injection systems can be avoided.

How it works

The brine sample is charged into a Hastelloy test cell and pressurized to the test pressure, up to 20,000 psi. A magnetic stirrer keeps the sample mixed while the cell is cooled at a controlled rate through the range of -20 to 60 °C. Sample temperature is measured with an accuracy of ±0.1 °C. The onset of crystallization is detected during the cooling program and the corresponding temperature is reported as the pressurized crystallization temperature. Pressure and cooling are the controlled variables; the crystallization onset temperature is the measured output.

The instrument runs the pressurization, cooling and detection sequence automatically, which gives reproducible results without manual observation. It operates on 220 VAC, 50/60 Hz, single phase. Pressure and temperature ratings, wetted materials, cell geometry and instrumentation are set for each project.
