Slake-Durability Index Meter
The Slake-Durability Index Meter (CT-SDI) measures how well weak rock resists weakening and disintegration under wetting and drying. Rock fragments tumble in a mesh drum partly immersed in water through standard cycles, and the retained mass gives the slake-durability index. The test follows ASTM D4644 and the ISRM suggested method. The index rates mudstones and shales for weathering and handling.
How it works
A weighed set of fragments is placed in the mesh drum, and the drum rotates while partly immersed in water for a standard cycle at up to 20 rpm. Material that breaks down passes out through the mesh. The fraction that stays in the drum is dried and weighed, the cycle is repeated, and the index is calculated from the mass retained relative to the starting mass.
Drum rotation speed, number of cycles and immersion are the controlled variables. Retained mass before and after the cycles is the measured one. Dual-drum configurations are available. The unit measures 300 x 500 x 500 mm (W x H x L), weighs 30 kg and runs on 220 VAC, 50/60 Hz.
