Brazilian Indirect Tension Fixture

  • The Brazilian Indirect Tension Fixture LEITB100ASTMD3967 loads a rock disc across its diameter in a compression frame until the disc splits, and the indirect tensile strength is calculated from the failure load. The fixture follows ASTM D3967 and the ISRM suggested method. The Brazilian method is the standard indirect tensile test for brittle rock and concrete. The item is supplied as a fixture for use in a compression load frame; the frame is not part of the item.

    How it works

The disc specimen sits between two curved jaws that apply a compressive line load along its diameter. Compression across the loaded diameter induces a tensile stress perpendicular to it, and the disc fails in tension along that line. The failure load is recorded and the Brazilian tensile strength is calculated from the failure load and the specimen dimensions.

The fixture is rated for 100 kN and made of stainless steel. Jaw sets are listed for specimen diameters of 38.1 mm (1.5 in), 42.0 mm (BX) and 54.7 mm (NX). Specimen thickness is 0.2 to 0.75 times the specimen diameter. Specimen size and jaw radius are selected per project.
