Specimen Flatness and Perpendicularity Gage
The Specimen Flatness and Perpendicularity Gage (CT-FLG) checks prepared cylindrical rock specimens before they are loaded. It measures end flatness and the straightness and perpendicularity of the sides, and compares the deviations with the specimen preparation tolerances of ASTM D4543. Correct geometry keeps strength and modulus results valid and comparable between tests, so the check sits between specimen preparation and loading.
How it works
The specimen stands on a granite base, 200 x 300 x 50 mm, which serves as the reference surface. The operator indexes the specimen by hand against the gage and reads the deviation at successive positions on the end face and along the side. Flatness is read across each end. Perpendicularity is the deviation of the end relative to the specimen axis, and straightness is read along the cylindrical surface. The readings are then compared with the tolerance for the specimen size.
Specimens up to 300 mm (12 in) high can be measured. Gage resolution is 0.01 mm (0.0005 in). The unit weighs 20 kg. Nothing is loaded or driven; control is limited to manual positioning of the specimen.
