Bottom hole sampler
The bottom hole sampler is a positive displacement tool run on slickline or wireline to capture a representative hydrocarbon sample at reservoir depth and bring it to surface for PVT study. It is rated 15,000 psi (1,000 bar) and 200 °C (400 °F), holds a 600 cc sample and is mercury free. The tool is a stainless steel cylinder 43 mm in outside diameter and 3.71 m long, weighing 30 kg.
How it works
The body contains a hydraulic fluid chamber and a sample chamber separated by a floating piston, together with a mechanical timer, a triggering system, a hanging head and a closing mechanism. Before the run the hydraulic buffer fluid is pressurized. Once the tool is positioned near the formation, well fluid enters the sample chamber and displaces the buffer fluid at a controlled rate, so the sample is collected at the pressure and temperature of the reservoir. At the time set on the mechanical clock, 5 hours as standard, the trigger closes and locks the sample chamber and the tool is pulled to surface.
Wetted parts are H2S-resistant stainless steel, titanium and brass alloy. At surface the sample is moved to a piston-type sample cylinder on the downhole sampling transfer bench, where a bubble point check validates it; a heating jacket returns the tool to reservoir temperature before transfer.
